Crop and Land-Use Marker Examples

High confidence in crop group prediction

Description

The first example FOI = 7025947001 is declared as a meadow (group 1). Indeed, the crop-group marker unequivocally agrees with a 99 % pseudo-probability that the FOI belongs to the meadows crop-group. Furthermore, we can see in the NDVI time-series the similarity marker also confirms the declaration. Finally, we can also see that a mowing event has been detected on the FOI. In the summer months we see clear visual confirmation, that the FOI has been mowed in several parts.

Lower confidence in crop group prediction

Description

The next example is a FOI = 6994688001 that is claimed to be summer barley, belonging to the summer grains crop-group (group 9). The crop-group marker confirms this, but with a relatively low score of 53 %. Other relatively high predictions score groups are groups 2 (corn-like crops) with a 27 % score and 3 (winter grains) with a 19 % score. While upon visual inspection it seems clear, the claim is correct, we can get a glimpse into the confusion of the marker between very similar crops. The confusion between summer and winter crops can likely be attributed to there only being about half a month to a month of temporal difference between summer and winter grains, making the classes separable, but not trivially so. The confusion with corn, which has an expected NDVI high in August, can likely be attributed to a secondary crop on the surface of the FOI, that has a similar high in August. Still, despite the picture not being as crystal clear as before, the markers still agreed that the claim is correct.

Built-up land use predicted

Description

FOI = 6084493001 is claimed to have the meadow land-use (group 2), however, the land-group markers predicts it to be at least partially built-up (group 14), with a 99 % score. Upon visual inspection it is quite clear that this really is the case, as the north-eastern corner of the FOIs seems to have some artificial surface covering it, also confirmed by the built-up classifier probability mask.

Claimed to be grassland, predicted arable land

Description

FOI = 6299345001 is again claimed to be of meadow land-use (group 2), and again the land-group marker disagrees. This time it predicts an agricultural land-use group more specifically arable-land (group 1) with a 93 % score. This is again quite easily confirmed upon visual inspected and corroborated with the bare-soil classifier probability mask which shows that bare-soil is present on almost the entire FOI after July. The presence of bare-soil is not allowed on meadows, making the claim not in line with reality.
